I moved into my first apartment from my parents place back in September 2025. I'm in a suite next to the communal laundry room for context. Throwaway account to prevent doxxing. Everything had been going great until March 2026. I got home on a Sunday and noticed another tenant leaving the laundry room as I was walking in my door. Then noticed some water pooled next to my oven... thought maybe my dog made a mess while drinking. Shortly afterwards, my kitchen started flooding. I opened my cupboard below the sink and water was gushing out of my pipes and backing up into my sinks. Long story short, the washing machine next door had backed up into my pipes and luckily I got home when I did to lay out all my towels for the mini flood. It caused water damage to my cupboard and floor. After speaking to the resident manager AND maintenance, I learned this is a common problem that always happens in these suites next to the laundry room. There was nowhere in my lease stating that this issue is a reoccurring problem. I've checked the lease over multiple times since this incident. I travel a lot for work and am now fearful I'll one day come back to water damaged belongings... I don't own anything super expensive but replacing rugs and stuff does cost money, which may not be worth making a claim to my insurance provider if it happens regularly? Has anybody else dealt with something like this?? Do I have any recourse here? Im a little upset this is apparently a known issue and they're treating it like a "welp, call us when it happens again and we'll get the pipes cleaned out" ??? Would appreciate any insight. Thank you!
